County Squad Selection Sub Committee Report Feb 2009
At a recent DNAA Committee meeting, the County Squad selection sub committee (CSSSC) were asked to review the process of senior squad selection and the information appertaining to this. It would appear that over a number of years a considerable amount of confusion has arisen as to the process for the selection of teams to participate in the Pentangle and the Five Counties shoot. As a result of this the selection sub committee has investigated many possibilities and whilst undertaking this exercise we also looked at the constitution of Durham and Northumberland Archery Association. In this Constitution Article 09, the position of the Honorary Records Officer is clarified.
For this reason we are suggesting that the squads be chosen as per the Constitution.
1 - The sub committee will be supplied, via the HRO, shoot records from competitions held within DNAA from the previous year's Pentangle until the date of the sub committee meeting.
2 - Any archer who has scores from outside of DNAA must take responsibility for submitting the verified score to the HRO prior to the date of the sub committee meeting. It is our suggestion on this point that archers forward all scores to the HRO as soon as the competition results are published.
3 - Any archers who do not wish to be selected must inform the selection sub committee, the HRO and the committee of DNAA
4 - The selection sub committee will forward to the HRO the following numbers of archers:
Pentangle:
4 + 2 (non traveling) gents compound 4 + 2 (non traveling) gents recurve
4 + 2 (non traveling) ladies compound 4 + 2 (non traveling) ladies recurve
From these figures if one of the first four in each category is unable to represent the County then a selection will be made from one of the two reserves.
Five Counties:
3 + 2 (non traveling) gents compound 3 + 2 (non traveling) gents recurve
3 + 2 (non traveling) ladies compound 3 + 2 (non traveling) ladies recurve
2 + 1(non traveling) gents longbow
1 + 1 (non traveling) ladies longbow
From these figures if one of the first three in each category (except longbow) is unable to represent the County then a selection will be made from one of the two reserves (or one reserve if longbow).
5 - The selection sub committee will meet to select the squads in April / May for the Pentangle and August / September for the Five Counties.
6 - From the information provided above, it is also suggested that the Team Manager has the authority, should a team member not be able to participate, to select one of the reserve team members.
7 - In accordance with 09.2, the selection sub committee would also request that the HRO include, in the notification to archers selected to shoot for the County, the contact details for the Team Manager and also a SAE to confirm their ability, availability and willingness to represent the County with a realistic time frame for return. The HRO and Team Manager are to keep each other fully informed of progress with regards to the selection.
8 - The selection sub committee also believe that once an archer is selected to represent DNAA that the appropriate medals and date bars are presented on the day of the shoot.
9 - It was also indicated that it would be appropriate for all team members to promote DNAA by wearing DNAA colours and logos. To this end, it is proposed that all Team members be given sweatshirts / t-shirts with the DNAA logo and the date and year of the shoot along with the category they have been selected to partake in.
10 - It is strongly recommended that all DNAA archers are fully aware of the process, criteria and protocol for the selection of county team squads. It is therefore proposed that the website is updated and all Club Secretaries are asked to make this information available to all Club Members and notify the Committee that this information has been disseminated to their Club.
The selection sub committee have also discussed the possibility of team training sessions being held for archers who have been selected and also for those who have shown potential to shoot for county.
